Ngl it’s exhausting hearing athletes break down how their millions “aren’t re ally millions” after taxes and fees. 40M after taxes is still 40M.

The real issue isn’t the system, it’s lifestyle creep. Nobody told you to li ve like a king, buy 5 cars, or move with a 10 person entourage. Modest is allowe d

Odell Beckham Jr

https://x.com/katsuxbt/status/2076309440509132…

“I’ve always explained this to people, bro, you give somebody a five-year, $10 0 million contract – what is it really?” he said.

“It’s five years for 60 (million). You’re getting taxed. Do the math, that’s 12 a year that you have to spend, use, save, invest, flaunt, whatever.

I’mma buy a car, I’mma give my momma a house. Everything costs money.

So, if you’re spending $4 million a year – that’s really $40 million over f iv e years – eight a year.

“Now, you start breaking down the numbers and it’s like that’s a five-year sp an of where you’re getting $8 million. Can you make that last forever?

And you always hear the people who ain’t us and ain’t be in the position, li ke, ‘Oh that would last a lifetime.’

Yeah, this job I sacrificed my whole life for, they are giving me that. I didn’t ask for the certain dollar amount or whatever.

https://x.com/katsuxbt/status/2065191766425214…

During an episode of the 7 PM in Brooklyn podcast, Anthony stated, "That's $10 0 million, but it's not really $100 million over a five-year span." His point wa s not that superstars are struggling to buy groceries or pay rent.

Instead, Anthony wanted people to realize that the contract figures announced by media outlets represent gross income rather than actual take-home. He wanted to clear up the confusion about how professional athlete compensation functions.

Anthony explained the cycle by saying, "You're talking half your check gone to t axes. Then you gotta live, the house, take care of your mom, your agency fee, al l of this stuff happening…" A clip of the conversation was highlighted on X b y user @AllFactsHoops.

High-earning athletes face the top federal tax rate of 37%, plus state and loc al income taxes. On top of that, they pay a unique "jock tax" in every single ci ty and state where they play away games.

When you add standard NBA agent fees, which can take up to 4% of a contract, p lu s the essential costs of housing and supporting a family, a $20 million annual s alary gets cut in half.

Anthony noted that the psychological impact of this cycle is what catches play er s off guard. He noted, "And that drastic change of lifestyle messes you up men ta lly. That's the grey area that gets a lot of athletes.”

Professional basketball careers last an average of just under five years, and th is means the high-earning window closes fast. When the multi-million dollar ch ec ks stop coming, athletes have to transition into budgeting for standard daily ex penses.

Anthony used his 19-year NBA experience to defend the message and provide much-n eeded context.

He made it clear that the discussion is not about looking for sympathy, but ra th er about teaching younger players how to prepare for the future.
